I am moving to Tucson and wanting to buy a 2000 Oakwood MFH. It's down the street from my Mother in a subdivision where you also own the lot.

It has way more of everything than I ever thought about and I was sort of wanting an old place with all the built ins and stuff from the 70s . However as the place is on a hill with an amazing view and also only 6 or 7 miles from my brother and his wife, I'd kind of like this place.

It's been "rode hard and put away wet': kind of grubby and needing some affection. What I have been reading about Oakwood products makes me wary to the point of getting a 71 Hillcrest 17 miles away in another sub where you own the land for some 25,000 less.

The Oakwood is at the top of what I am wanting to spend, but the location, property, size of the lot and view might all make any housing problems I run into along the way worth it. I'll be paying cash but don't want to buy a money pit either.

Any advice or info on Oakwood Homes would be appreciated

A 10 year old Oakwood is no different than any other 10 year old home...To make you feel better you might want to hire a professional home inspector who will report the actual condition and the cost of any required repairs..

A 1971 (39 year old home ) which is pre HUD regulations is bound to have lots of issues..Some could well be life threatening (aluminum wiring).

When you are buying land and home LOCATION is the first and foremost consideration. A 2000 model Oakwood probably was not the finest home built at the time but it did meet the HUD requirements..You can always decorate it in the retro style you like..

Thanks.Will definitely use an inspector and the location is such that job opportunities,medical,family and shops are all nearby.That should be more than enough to compensate for any problems I meet along the way. The other place is a popular and older over 55 subdivison that is equally attractive and offers all sorts of amenities and moderate HOA fees.Either way,I think I'll be happy.I would rewire for certain, like I did my 1947 post war tract home here in the San Fernando Valley : it still had the cloth wrapped wire and glass fuses when I bought it.

I've been lurking on this site for years and have enjoyed it. This is really a fascinating industry and to my mind factory building is a practical and cost efficient way to construct a home.
