2 x 8 or 2 x 6; 16" or 24" centers
2 x 8 or 2 x 6; 16" or 24" centers
We've been looking at manufactured homes for a few months now. so many people say that Palm Habor is the best and they certainly look the best. However, if i am not mistaken, they use 2 x 6 wall studs and 2 x 8 floor joists on 24" centers, while other use 2 x 4 wall studs and 2 x 6 floor joists on 16" centers. which is better?
Re: 2 x 8 or 2 x 6; 16" or 24" centers
Most important in my opinion is the 16 inch centers...
If 2x6's and 2x8's are important to you..there are manufacturers willing to do them on 16 inch centers...
While you are at it be sure the ceiling rafters are also on 16 inch centers..
Palm Harbor is like most other large manufacturers..They build different homes in each of the plants...as a matter of fact they like others probably build different models in the same plants...all with different building specs...some better than others..

Re: 2 x 8 or 2 x 6; 16" or 24" centers
All of the PH we have looked at are 2x6 exterior and 2x3 interior 2x8 joists on 16 centers. PH builds a nice looking home with a lot of eye candy. A lot of people trash PH but I have seen very few problems posted.
Re: 2 x 8 or 2 x 6; 16" or 24" centers
Ive been in my PH for just over six months now, I have 2x4 int, 2x6 ext, 2x8 joist, all on 16" centers. My experiance with PH was bittersweet. It took forever for them to get the home ready, land improvements,inspections,etc..
I live in Winston Salem NC, and bought the home from Rocky Mt, 250 miles away..reason being I got a very good deal on a lot model 2002. It has 4 bedrooms, 3 full baths, living room, sitting room etc..
I made 3 payments before ever moving in....having said that I watched all the process' that took place, all the land improvements, setting the home etc.. Im extremly pleased now that Im in the home. The PH is an extremly solid home. One bit of advice...take your time and get everything in writeing.
I wish you the best.

2x4 interior
I was told by the factory rep for PH that they do not make an home with 2x4 interior walls only the marriage wall is 2x4 all other walls are 2x3. Depending on how important 2x4 walls is to you this may be worth checking out. The only manufacturers that I have found that offer 2x4 walls are Sunshine, Karsten, Franklin, Solitaire on support walls and some Fuqua. I am sure there are several others out there I just haven't seen them but I don't believe PH is one of them.
