Ok Mr. M. In a real nutshell, we ordered a new home from Homes of Merit thta was built in the Lake City Plant. The house came in and placed out on our lot and everything is perfect, done exactly right. EXCEPT, in one bedroom we asked that a window be placed on a certain wall for very explicit reasons. That was critical believe it or not. Yes it was very clearly marked on our final sign off to HOM prior to construction beginning.

Today, I sent a fax of issues we were concerned with to our dealer who has been nothing short of phenominal. We just started a list of things that needed to be addressed before we close. He was to say the least, very surprised and was going to send the info to HOM. With the present window placement the view is of the side of our garage and also we purchased new modular office furniture specifically for that wall with NO window. It will not fit on the other wall. I told him that cutting the side of the house and moving the windows did not seem like anything I would want to have done now that the house is set in place.

That said, what do you feel the response will be, or better yet should be from HOM ? I personally would want nothing to do with the house if they start to cut apart walls etc. Not good imho. Let's see... hmmmm rebuild that half of the house? Offer a fairly nice discount since the house was not constructed to our exact specs? It took me 3 months to design this house. The plan did not exist prior to my design and just living with it for the next 20+ years is not an option unless, they made an adjustment that we could not refuse. That said, since it was not built exactly to our specs, am I in the right to ask or demand that they rebuild that portion to my specs? After all, that is why I sign off PRIOR to construction.

No that is much too drastic......Assuming the design you signed is the final design they had (and dealer did not sign a modified design later)...they will make it right...

Closing 1 window...and adding a new window is not nearly as drastic as you make out...It would be costly for them and they probably would offer a cash settlement....but the settlement will be only about the cost of the repair....I doubt this cost could be anymore than $1000...probably not that much...

Do not restrict them from trying to make it right...If you do you will probably get very little attention...and might close off any future settlement of this problem..

Now....it is possible the dealer signed (HOM does not require a customer signature...only a dealer signature...most dealers will review the final production specs with the consumer so that they can get no blame on problems)...a revised final production drawing that included this change...This change could have been because of some HUD requirement...HOM would NOT have made the change without at least a dealer signature...

If this is the case...your argument is with the dealer....This would be a much tougher arguement...he cannot make the window change as easily as HOM...


First...You did not notice this prior to delivery???..This would have been the time to object...

Have you talked to HOM?...I would call the service manager and bring this up....Ask him to review the production order and see if he admits an error...If not ask for a copy of the final production drawing...with acceptance signatures...then you will know who to discuss the issues with..

Under no circumstance short of complete destruction (such as a transport accident) would a factory produce a new 1/2 of home...Demanding such will only make your desire for a proper fix much harder..

We have been in our doublewide for 4 months now. When it was delivered to the dealership, it had some 'special order' windows that we did not order. These were little 1/2 octogon shape windows above the regular windows in the master bedroom and the windows on either side of the front door. (This was only 1 of the, to me, major things to be fixed). Besides having the regular windows lower becuase of these octogon ones, it made the home look unbalanced. The factory sent out 2 guys to fix what we found wrong before we ever moved in. They spent 72 hours on our home making it right.

My husband is retired and could be there daily to watch what was being done. We had them redo the 2 windows in the bedroom. They had to take off the siding at that area, take out the windows, take down interior wallboard, reframe windows, put windows back in place, put in insulation, put up wallboard and replace siding. This is something that can easily be done, it is just time consuming.

If you are not happy with the window now, PLEASE, get the factory to redo. You will always wish you had and not be happy with it in the long run.

Thanks Mr. Murray. The home was just brought out to our lot on Friday and since it was not noticed in a brief walkthru. I personally had to sign off the floorplan due to all the changes I had going on. It was a loooooong process indeed. I will not hinder any work and if they offer an option of a cash reductions, I may opt for that.

Talked to dealer this morning who has been great and he was going to contact HOM today.
