Clayton vs Skyline

Post by Greg » Tue Jun 17, 2003 8:57 pm

Hello all,.I have learned a great deal reading this board. I am getting down to the final choice of home. First of all, I will be placing my new home in Ocean City Maryland. Narrowed it down to a Clayton or Skyline. Could any of you wise people help with my decision, because I think I am going nuts looking at all these homes!
Out of the two, are there pro's and con's? A better one for same price range?
My biggest problem is, Clayton........better layout.......Skyline, I see better quality features baseboard air vents, trim....etc.
Comments !?
Thanks, Greg

Sylvia

Take the floorplans for the Clayton layout you like and show them to the Skyline folks and ask if they have something to match that. You might be surprised. Also, Google the words "Manufactured homes" and "floorplans" or "floor plans" and see what's on the web. Hundreds of floorplans are up for the browsing pleasure.

My Skyline is three years old and I am still wondering if the manufacturer will ever make the repairs. I've spent three years now on the internet and have never found a single complaint on the Clayton manufactured homes. I have found other folks ( Florida and California) that have experienced great problems with their Skyline.
My state SAA threw in the towel, and when I finally found someone at HUD to look into my problems, HUD sent a letter to the SAA and told them to get the manufacturer down here. HUD has been working on this for over six months, and I still have not seen any repairs to flooring and floor joists and some other minor items. Clayton has a top end unit - NORRIS. Good luck.
I just went out to my truck and got some papers - LUV Homes in Millsboro, DE; talk with Pat Walker. I spoke to these people the first if this month when my wife and I were at Rehoboth for vacation. Please contact me a [email protected]

P.S. Clayton has the option, just like Skyline, to put the air vents at the walls.

A few years ago I was a sales person @ LUV homes (owned by Clayton). We sold Skyline also. Both are decent quality, but Skyline would be my first choice. After the Sale service is the Dealer's responsibility. So check out your dealers very carefully. However, Skyline has factory based service and will take care of you even if the dealer won't (within reason of course and it takes longer for them to get to you). If the factories are close enough, I highly recommend visiting them. You may be very pleasantly surprised at what you can get them to do for you when you are face-to-face. I would be very surprised if Skyline didn't have a floorplan similiar to what you want. And Clayton can usually upgrade items considerably (at additional cost). Again my personal preference (based on experience) is Skyline. Skyline will even custom build at some factories.
