Randy's book sales
Randy's book sales
I've been looking through some books on buying manufactured housing at Barnes and Noble. They aren't too impressive but I'm wondering if Randy's books will be any better. In several places, I've seen the book advertised as the Internet's "#1 best selling book" on the subject. I'm sort of new to the Internet. What does that mean? How many copies of this book are "really" sold? Are the comments I see on this forum representative of a large number of buyers or just a few people? Anyone know the answer to this?
Re: Randy's book sales
I just e-mailed him yesterday, asking if there is an independent site recommending his book and what his credentials are. His response wouldn't make me choose not to buy the book, but it doesn't convince me to get out my credit card, either. Here was his response:
"I don't have any reviews other then the testimonies on my web site at,
www.buymfghome.com. I will tell you this that my books are the best selling on the Internet and are available on many of the most popular
sites dealing with manufactured housing. I have sold manufactured homes in the Northwest
for over five years and have delivered over 125 different homes through the Northwest. I am an independent and focus on issue that many of the main stream articles and books don't want to deal with. I do have a 15-day money back guarantee!"
I'll probably buy one from the bookstore and see what I think (much less expensive).

Re: Randy's book sales
As you can see...Randy is fairly new to the industry...He also does not sell many homes...most good sales persons deliver twice as many as he listed..His How to buy book might be useful...but the comparison guide is another thing..Large companies build as many as 40 different products...all with different features..most changing every 3 to 6 months...This makes it impossible to keep a guide up to date...By the time the book is written and printed..it is already out dated..
Randy is from the NE...where conventional housing is so sky high even the top 25% of income families have little luck buying a home..He recommends that buyers all buy the Rolles Royce of the industry...with out regard to the price...I think Randy would do the industry and average customer much better by informing them what they are buying....and..explaining what they can expect...and explaining homeowner resposibility..Few of my customers can buy the homes he recommends...I sell a range of lines...some of the best in the industry...but..affordable homes out sell the Rolles Royces 10 to 1..I too would like to sell only the top end....but I and my dealer would be very poor if that is all we did..The best we can do as dealers..is to be sure that all price range homes we sell are a good value for the customer..

Re: Randy's book sales
We offer dozens of books about manufactured housing, on several web sites that we own or operate. Randy's books have been the best sellers at each and every point of sale. There is a reason for that success. There are many considerations that a home buyer needs to understand prior to putting up his life savings or going into hock for the next 30 years. Randy's books are written in an informal plain English style so that any first time buyer with no experience in manufactured housing can gain an understanding of our products.
Randy's Manufactured Home Comparison Guide is the only book of it kind. There are no other books anyplace, that we have been able to find, that offer the consumer the wealth of information that is available between the covers of that book. THE GUIDE covers 40 brands of homes. Of course that is not every manufacturer, there are hundreds of brands. But the book reviews the best known and highest selling brands and offers the potential new home owner considerable insight into the complexities of the modern manufactured home. This book will explain to you, the differences between a well-built manufactured home and a poorly built one.
Randy received no monies to promote one company over another. All of his recommendations are based on exhaustive research and an true insiders knowledge of the industry. I have been actively involved in the MH industry for over 20 years and my only concern about Randy's writing is that he might stop. I have been actively urging him to continue his research and expand THE GUIDE adding more and more brands every year. I would be pleased to be the first subscriber to regular updates if we can just talk Randy away from the consulting end of his business and back to his writing desk.
I feel so strongly about this that, for the rest of this month, I will double Randy's usual 15 day money back guarantee. If you purchase either or both of his books from our book store and you are not 100% happy with them for any reason, I will give you an entire month, 30 DAYS, to return the books to us, for a FULL MONEY BACK REFUND. In 30 days you could easily read both of these books, learn the secrets and techniques that Randy describes and just send them back. I'm convinced that you will want to keep them to refer to guide you through out the purchase and installation process, and to pass along to friends and family who are thinking about buying a manufactured home.
Would you like to know which companies in the industry have good reputations for servicing their customers? Buying a home is a big decision so find out who's who in the industry and get honest answers to tough questions. Save time and aggravation by focusing on companies that take care of their customers with quality homes that will last a lifetime.

Re: Randy's book sales
I didn't mean to imply that Randy's books may not be worth it, especially given the existence of an unconditional money back guarantee. But as a matter of marketing, usually books say "Over 1 Million copies sold" or something concrete like that (if they purport to outsell other books in their class).
Since Randy's book appears to be the only book of this type selling on the Internet, the claim sounded odd to me and I wanted clarification of what the claim was intending to be... 5 books sold, 500, 5000..?
The Internet is such an anonymous place, it's hard sometimes to separate completely bogus claims from tried and true business successes. I'd suggest Randy attach some numbers to the claim, or something more concrete, if possible.
Again, thank you for answering my posting.

David...
As a 30 year veteran of the industry...I want to thank you for this site and your hard work for the industry..I am glad you have found a way to help the whole industry and make a living to boot..We all know that consumer education is the secret key to helping the industry thrive..We all see consumers everyday who would do themselves and the industry a favor by spending a little time to get up to speed and this site is wonderful for those who wish to do so..
I did not mean to start a flame war...randy is right...I have not read his books...but I have read his posts here and have made concluesions that might be wrong in relation to his books..
I made this post immediately after I read a post Randy made.that shows little understanding of the market and product in the SE..Candidly..I can understand..I have no knowledge and do not presume to be able to advise folks on the West coast or North of the Mason Dixon line...these markets are very different than our..
The post is referring to a fine manufactuer in the SE and is as follows:
"It's poor quality and will have very little resale value. It really depends on what you want 10 to 15 years down the road. A home that needs constent up-keep or a quality home with appreciation. I would encourage you to step up a little and focus on a better quality home. That's just my opinion.
Answering your other queston about sub-floors OSB is a poor choice"
This post cost that manufactuer a sale (read the response)..This post is completely off base...He is implying the home will not be worth anything 15 years from now...relates resale to basic quality when location is the most important factor and disparages OSB floors...In other posts hae recommends CressDeck over all others and not available any where in the SE..OSB..is definately a better choice than the pressboard many have..and plywood is not always available at many manufactuers..
I am afraid that I made the cardinal sin and ASSUMED that the quality of his books were related to the quality of this post...SHAME on me..I am guilty of making assumptions about his books on completely unrelated information...much like he is guilty of making the above statement without complete current information about the above manufactuer..
I trust your judgement...I will refrain from commenting on his books until I have bought and read them....Keep up the good work

Randy's Books
I own a 7year old Manufactured home. I am looking into buying a new manufactured home now for retirement. I purchased both of Randy's books within the past couple of weeks. These books are undervalued by at least half. Randy tells it like it is. Using his books I expect to save thousands off the price of a QUALITY manufactured home. So far I've discussed many of the points Randy makes with a couple of dealers. (they don't know I have the books heh heh) I even used his invoice price formula in one case and came within $1000 of the actual invoice. I have a written price quote on one home that is a model 3 months old. I managed to use Randy's technique to get a huge discount on the home delivered, and set up, tax included that is less than the original asking price. I am completely satisfied that Randy has written two outstanding books that provide the novice buyer with the knowledge to get the best deal possible on a quality manufactured home that is fair to everyone.
Thanks Randy...you're one in a million!
