First time home buyer

My wife and I have just started shopping for a new MH. We live in Middle TN and welcome all comments. We have looked at several different brands in our area and would like input on which brand has the best quality. Between Fleetwood, American Homestar, Oakwood, Clayton, and Cavalier we are favoring Cavalier for their quality. Clayton also looks pretty good but hasn't beat Cavalier's price. We've had a dealer for Oakwood promise us everything but the moon, but I've read just about everything here and see that they don't have such a good reputation in the industry. Fleetwood is out of the question as well as American Homestar. A friend of ours just ran out an purchased a MH (American Homestar) without doing any research whatsoever. He say's that the company has gone out of business and that is why he got such a good deal on his home including an extended 10 year warranty!! We were told that that so called warranty is really worthless. We are not going to make the same mistake they did so we really need some advice.

Thanks in advance.

You are right about your friends warranty, who will honor it. At least you did not come up with the OAKWOOD is bankrupt rumor, which is not true.
What model Oakwood are you looking at? You know you can order your OAKWOOD and customize it to your liking.

My son is looking for a MH and he is a first time buyer. We just made the last payment on our 15 year old Imperial MH. At the time it was the state of the art - but as we all know what is the state of the art today in one month it is passe'!! Anyway we live in NH bordering on MA and VT so our choices are very limited. Does your company finance in this area?

Marty,

I have worked as branch manager in the past for a MH wholesale supplier for a couple of years. In my experience the best manufactured homes would be Oakwood, Clayton, Rnell, or Mascot. Oakwood is not bankrupt, HOWEVER they have been having some business problems. Check the internet for Oakwood articles.

For a list of manufacturers see the following web site:

Hope this helps.
