Backsplash

Hi! Being a first-time owner of a used home, I went looking for forums, and voila! Here you are. We bought this as interim housing, and are fixing it up before reselling in a couple years. (And frankly, we like it better than the house we left!) This one has rather short upper kitchen cabinets leaving a rather tall area all around between them and the countertop. I originally wanted some washable wallpaper, but realized the whole area is made with those panels they use in mobile homes with the 1' wide joint strips that run vertically. How big a pain would it be to try to wallpaper over those joints?? The tile look wallpaper I found is over $60, and I don't want to buy it if it will be a problem. Anyone here ever wallpapered over those joints?
