Why do MF home execs live in site-built homes? Well...ego has a lot to do with it. Look at all the trophy houses out there. There really aren't trophy manufactured homes, because that's a different market.
Everyone's different. Myself, I prefer to own the place, rather than making monster payments forever. Big trophy houses aren't necessarily a good investment, once maintenance, taxes, utilities, and other costs are taken into account. They take longer to sell, too, at least in my market. I want to hurry up and retire - or choose what I do for a living, without a mortgage encumbering me. To me, this was the best value, by a substantial margin.
Our house is just fine. We got things added and changed that would have cost far more in a site-built home.
Manufactured Home :) a responce
Re: Manufactured Home :) a responce to steve
man, would my guys like to meet steve. steve could you tell me what size footers and spacing will be needed to set up a home on soil that tests at 2000 lbs per square foot and what type anchors and how many are required with a probe test of 350 lbs. and then how high must home be set to allow for 1/4 inch slope per foot of drain line, and once you determine that how block will be needed to do the job without having to go back for more. and also how will you get each 16 foot section down the road and onto the lot. may not be able to travel the way you go get bread. are all your permits in place, how many escorts will we need , and how will be placed on site does the back section or front section need to be delivered first. and golly how do you get them things together, you need how many rollers , jacks , come alongs, lags and what else. but i forget an idiot could do this, and i guess all those nail drivers that built your house had a PHD. for someone so smart you sure stated something completely ignorant. just in case you wonder, i do live in a manufactured home, as does everyone that works for me. , i have also hauled many add ons additions built by stick builders and the trailer always makes the trip better. i have a friend who moves stick built homes. they put them on steel beams etc. you should see the drywall cracks after that move . if you have you stick built , stay in it and leave us to our trailers. it is snobby , whiny little worms , like yourself that gives stick built owners a bad name.

I have had more than one chuckle reading this thread. My dh and I have spent the last 2 years researching and planning our stick built home. About a month ago he came to me and broached the idea of MH. My instant reaction was one of devestation but I trust him so I went to some lots, started asking questions, and very soon recognized that although we could afford to build our 2400 sq ft stick built, we had better things to do w/ our money than tie it up in an enormous mortgage. If you have read the book, "Rich Dad Poor Dad" as we have than you know that "your home is your greatest asset" is not really true. We know ppl with beautiful shopiece trophy homes who lay awake at night wondering how they are going to afford their home as well as thir lifestyle. These are people who will continue to work harder and harder at their jobs, loosing more and more quality of life. That's when your home becomes a liability...tieing up $ in a mortgage that could be working for you earning more money in investments.
As for me, my devestation has turned to anticipation as I eagerly await the chance to become "the queen of my triple wide trailer with the polyester curtains and the redwood deck"
