Destiny 1999 double wide home

Post by psuthoff » Sun Aug 05, 2012 2:46 pm

We have a double wide Destiny 1999. There is a fireplace in the middle near the split where the sides are joined together. This fireplace is open on both sides, on the front is the living room and the back is the den.
My question is this..... is this fireplace structure load bearing?
We would like to remove the fireplace to make a larger living space.
Thanks so much for any help you can give us.

If the fireplace bridges both sides it probably carries some roof load. That is not to say that you cant remove it.

Find a good carpenter that understands framed structures. Let him take the fireplace apart to see how it supports the roof. There is probably a framed wall hiding in there. A good carpenter will know what to add, in the way of a header, to support a larger opening in the wall.

You will probably also need to add additional foundation piers under the marriage line to support and level the larger opening in the wall.

If you hare handy and have experience re-supporting framed wall openings Download the Manual for Manufactured Home Repair & Upgrade The repair and upgrade techniques described in this manual are specific to manufactured homes. Not only does this book show you how to repair and maintain your manufactured home, but also great methods for upgrading it.

The fireplace is only on the front side. I appreciate your answer. We are remodeling our kitchen now and then we are planning to check that fireplace out. If we remove it it will give us so much more space for family gatherings. So far we have successfully remodeled our master bath and replacing floors in utility room which is next to the bath. We have added a 40 foot porch on the back and a 30 foot deck on the front. We love the layout of our home but we want to be sure as we remodel we keep our structure solid.
Thanks,
