Lien Not Removed

In November 2004 my husband and I signed a contract to add a second story to our home. After about 5 weeks we decided not to pursue the addition and canceled the contract. In early 2005 the company went out of business and the owner was arrested and put in jail for things he did with his business. We have now applied for a home equity loan to make repairs to our home and when the bank did a title search they found that the company that went out of business never removed the lien on our property. How do we get a lien removed by a company that is no longer in business?

In most states you would do best to contact a title insurance agency. They will have the most experience correcting land title problems. You will probably need to purchase a title insurance policy... but the bank would insist on having that at closing a loan anyway.
