Does distance from plant change price?

Post by Mississippi Consumer » Fri Oct 19, 2007 1:11 pm

I have priced the same home at my local dealer and at a dealer closer to the plant in north Alabama. The price from my local dealer (160 miles from plant) is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than the dealer closer to the plant (50 miles from plant). This wouldn't be a problem, however, I have recently been told that the cheaper dealer does not come as far as my location.

Question: Does distance from the plant affect prices that much?

The distance from the factory is certainly a factor as the freight cost is usually figured by the mile. So if a dealer is three times the distance from the builders plant he has to recapture three times the freight expense prior to reaching profit.  It is best to purchase form a retailer who is close to your home site.  He will be most familiar with the local permitting and installation rules and contractors and be in a better position to offer you prompt service during the warranty period.   The installation of your home is perhaps the most important factor for its future performance.  Pay close attention to the details of your home's installation. If you want to enjoy your home for years to come the site prep and installation must be handled properly,  it is critical that you understand the entire process. The most effective way to learn about the step by step process involved in properly installing a manufactured home is a great video series with George Porter, the industry's most respected installation specialist. Mr.. Porter leads you through a two hour viewing experience that will prepare you for the numerous operations and complexities involved in the installation of the modern manufactured home. As the other poster said...distance will make a difference and ft. can be substancial....There could well be other differences as well...DSifferent local set up requirements come to mind, option differences you had not noticed..The list goes on and on and on. The more local dealer will be most up to speed.Of costs and requirements in your area.Be glad the cheaper dealer is honest...He knows he cannot service your home from his distance and has decided not to sell you and leave you holding the service bag as many would have done...

If you like the home and your budget fits, there is NO better time to buy...Go For It...
