Replacing double windows with French Doors

Post by scottyl » Tue Feb 27, 2007 10:07 pm

My doublewide doors are located in the front and left side. My double windows are located in the back center of the house. Im thinking about putting FRENCH DOORS where the double windows are. This would lead to my back patio.
Question: would this creat a problem?

It could. If the double windows header is not as long as you need for the french doors, you will be doing a major alteration to the home. which is likely to lead to ceiling cracking.
Also, the location of the doors is dicated by egress escape considerations of the HUD code. If you close off one of the other two doors, you would be violating the code as well.

keep in mind, manufactured homes are not built or designed to be modified. sorry.

I have to disagree with Manny. You can renovate your manufactured home in much the same way as any other framed structure

Like any structural changes putting in a French Door could create a problem if it is not done correctly. The header that holds up the structure over each window would need to be increased in length and probably in width in order to hold up the structure of the home that will be over the greater open space of the double doors.

We have successfully replaced windows with sliding glass doors several times. If you have not had experience with this type of carpentry you should seek the services of a competent contractor who understands how to compensate for the added open space.

Most glass doors placements make the interior of the home feel more spacious and open. The additional access to the exterior, especially if you add a porch or patio just outside the door can greatly enhance your enjoyment of being at home.
