bathtub drain

If I have existing 60''X36" bathtub, can I replace it with wider (48") without drastic changes to the existing drain system? Is the drain always in middle of the bathtub?

The changes wouldn't be too drastic in any case - you might have to replace the pipe (most likely black ABS) from the 90 degree bend on up, and you might have to cut a new hole in the floor to run the pipe through.
