painting walls
painting walls
I have a 1998 double wide, I would like to paint the walls.....kind of update it a bit.
Any tips on how to prepare walls, what type paint, etc?....these are traditional Mobile home walls, not tape/textured.

How about a book that covers all facets of manufactured home repair? Look at The Manual for Manufactured Home Repair & Upgrade
As you would expect from the title, The repair and upgrade techniques described in this manual are specific to manufactured homes. This book will answer almost every question on manufactured home repair that we have ever heard. Not only does this book show you how to repair and maintain your home, but also great methods for upgrading it.
Available in print version and now also in e-book version for instant download.

Re: painting walls
Mike,
I have actually completed this throughout my 1997 Manufactured Home. With great success. I have enjoyed my textured and painted walls and have received many compliments.
For the steps:
After washing the walls, I prepared them with KILZ primer. This allowes texture or paint to adhere to the surface. I then taped and sanded the space between sheets of drywall. Once done with that, I textured the walls (I had fun experimenting with different textures throughout the house) and then primed once again. I know that's a pain, but it is worth it! THEN comes the paint.
Good luck!
Note: I also added in real trim wood around doors/windows/and floor boards.

Re: painting walls
Mike,
Kilz is a good solution as well as any paint primer. If your looking at only painting.Once it's primed let it dry and primer it again. Then paint the color of choice. Once it dries paint it again.Yes 2 coats for each process. That's the mininum. Altough I would suggest Tape and Texure your home. It's easy, not expensive and makes the home really stand out.

Re: painting walls
I'm a little confused (okay, very confused) about what "tape and texture" means on walls.
We have those brown paneled walls which someone painted white, but the panels can still be seen.
Please clarify what taping means. Taping with what? Texturing with what?
Many thanks.

Re: painting walls
Mary-
Tape and texture refers to drywall. When drywall is installed, the seams and screw holes are filled with drywall mud and then taped, sanded and texture is blown onto the walls. With your paneled walls, you could fill the grooves with drywall mud and sand it smooth, tape and mud the seams and sand it smooth, prime the walls and then paint or wallpaper over it. I've seen it where a wallpaper underlayment is put up to further smooth out the walls before the final wallpaper.

Re: painting walls
We are buying a home with the grooved vinyl covered walls. Can we prime and paint over them? Could I tape between the panels and eliminate those pieces that now stick out between the panels? We don't want to put too much into this but want to make it look modern and match our furniture color schemes.
