moving home to basement foundation?

Post by kara » Fri Jun 24, 2005 4:24 pm

I am getting split answers on this question where I live and thought maybe someone here could share their thoughts.

I have a 4 bedroom doublewide 2000 clayton home. My family is outgrowing our space quickly. We were thinking about having someone come in and pour a basement that we would move our home onto. Is this possible to do? Some mobile home places here say yes, some say no.

Our other option was to build off the back of the house, making 2 or 3 room addition with a basement under the new rooms only. I have been told it puts alot of stress to add additional structures onto the home. The back of our house is very high off the ground making putting a basement under the new addition a possibility. Any thoughts on this idea.

We need more space. We love our land and I really do like my home, just want to update and gain more space.

One more question, can you paint over wall board? Or do you have to prime it first? I have been wanting to change the colors on the walls for some time now and wasn't sure how to go about it.

Thanks for any input and sorry for all the questions.

Yes you can move the home on a basement, but it would be a very expensive process plus there could be damage to the home.

As to adding to the home, again you can but keep in mind, the new addition has to be supported on it's own, not at all by the existing manufactured home.
The new additon can be attached but not at all supported by the existing home.

Good luck

Basement idea sounds interesting...but very pricy...If you choose to do this...be sure the contractor has experience in basements for manuactured homes..Your original set up manual will have usefule info about the requirements for the foundation..

I would save the wall work unbtil after the move...

Thank you for your responses. As far as being costly, we were thinking of having a basement foundation poured at the other end of our property (we have 10 acres of land) and having a new home set on it. But, we would have to pay for a new well and sewer system to be put in and utility hook ups also. Seeing as we already have our sewer and septic in place where our current home is we thought it would make more sense to just stay where we are and somehow add onto our home where it is. By the sounds of Dan's response maybe the way to go would be the addition with basement only under the new rooms. That would give us the extra space we need and be less expensive than basement and moving home onto it. The basement we were looking into is prefab and they are placing mobile homes and manufactured homes on them alot around my area. The cost is about 25,000 to have it put up. Probably around the cost of having an addition put onto the back. Not sure what to do....alot to think over. Thank you again for your responses.
