In a recently purchased 2005 modle 16x80 mobile home, equipped with a Miller M1S oil gun furnace with central a/c I'm having trouble getting use to the loud noise of the units blower. Is there anything I can do? The furnace unit is in a closet in the hall way. There is a door on the closet but it has cut out openings with grills on the top and bottom of the door. I assume this is to allow the air return to the unit.

An attributing problem is the furnace unit is located right outside of the master bedroom. Can I add insulation inside of the closet to help muffle the sound-- or would this cause a fire hazard? This is a retirement home - purchased in downsizing from a large house where the mechanicals were in the basement and Quiet! Maybe it is something I will just have to get use to hearing- but it's hard to sleep with the noise of the blower. Otherwise I love my new home. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, many MH builders cut corners and use cheaper, noisier furnaces, when much quieter models are available. Adding insulation won't do much for you; as long as air can flow freely in and out of the closet, so will sound. Restricting air flow to the unit could drastically effect its efficiciency at the very least, and could potentially create a serious hazard.

You might want to check with some local HVAC contractors. They may be able to upgrade you to a quieter unit, and might even give you some trade-in credit for your furnace, as it's a pretty new unit.

THE DEALER WE BOUGHT IT FROM SAID WE WILL HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT...
HE THEN HAD A MAN COME IN AND HE PUT ON A METAL LOUVER DOOR, AND PUT A PIECE OF SHEET METAL OVER IT AND DUCT TAPED IT SHUT...
MY DAUGHTER HAD A FIT DUE TO IT NOT GETTING ENOUGH AIR, AND WAS AFRAID OF CARBON MINOXIDE POISINING.
OUR FUEL DEALER SAID IT COULD HAVE RUINED OUR FURNACE AND OUR AIR....MILLER REP. WAS IN AND SAID IT WAS IN TOLERANCE WITH NOISE LEVELS.....
I WISH I KNEW WHAT TO DO ALSO, OUR FURNACE IS BLOWING INSULATION INTO OUR LIVING AREA DAILY...AND NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO FIX IT....DUCTS WERE SPOTLESS, SO NOW WHERE DO WE GO?
