Has anyone done a MH replacement and HAD to put in a NEW larger septic tank ?? I was told the one I have might be too small since it was put in many years ago and codes have changed ...

Septic systems are usually based on the occupancy capacity of the home. So yes, if you are getting a larger home, you may need a larger tank and field. That's why it's always a good idea to put in the biggest system you can the first time.

You can never have to much capacity.

I had to add some leech lines a few years ago. They just scabbed on to the old ones with a "T" so hopefully I will only have to replace the tank ....

How can I find out what size it is ?? Would HUD have that on record ?

HUD wouldn't know or care. Whoever installed the tank might still have it on record, but you may end up having to dig to expose the top of the tank, at which point you can take the measurements. You may have to do this anyway if it's going to require an inspection.

Most common size for a home is a 1000 gal tank.County codes in your area and septic type system will govern the actual size you need.

You'll need to have it pumped and certified before you can place a new home on your property. Certified that it's in good working order, they'll tell you then how big it is, gallon wise. Around here, 1000 gallons allows a 3 BR home, 4 BR has to be 1250.

Originially we were putting in a 3-bedroom mobile home so the permit required two 1,000 gallon tanks, but now we have a one-bedroom home. I think the two-tank system is a requirement of the county because I didn't see anywhere else that we would need that large of a septic system.

Your septic system documents may be filed with your county. We replaced one home with a larger one; the county couldn't find the record of it, so just asked that we leave it uncovered for their inspection.
