How do I anchor a rather heavy shelf on the bathroom wall when I can only locate one stud? It needs to be anchored in 2 places.

Try something called a "Simplex Wall-Lok".I don't remember if I bought them from a parts dealer on-line or Home Depot.I have hung heavy things with these and no special tools needed.
