I have a 28 x 56 with comp.shingle roofing. It is a lil overdue in being replaced. I don't have perim.blocking as my orig.set instrux said outrigger system was sufficient support for home....

til now???


I would like to do nice 2 or 3 foot wide metal (29 gg) roofing on my home.

My plans are 1 x 4 furring strips and new metal over. I am hoping the comp.shingles can "insulate" the roof and also defer rain-noise.

Am I right??

Or should I ___________
1) take off old first?

New metal roof should not add a significant amount of weight to your roof.

Recommend talking to a few roofing contractors in your area for bids and ideas. Also check with your state building inspectors - you may need a permit / review state requirements for re-roofing.

Use a quality metal roof system w/ good vent seals for the roof penetrations, edging, and roof venting system. Ensure you replace your existing roof venting system with an equivalent capacity system that works with the new metal roof (example - vent foam or preformed vent that goes under the metal ridge cap)

29 gage metal is too thin to lay over the existing shingles. 26 gage metal could be carefully installed over the existing shingles.

Metal roofs look great and should add curb appeal to your home.
