Is there a difference between the legal descriptions / attributes of a 'manufactured home' vs 'mobile home'?

Someone will correct me (thanks!), but mobile homes are those made prior to some time in 1977 when the HUD Manufactured Home Act went into effect, setting Federal standards. Houses built after that are termed manufactured homes. They have tended, in my opinion, to be beefier-built, with the intention of lasting longer. Current manufactured homes should have a 50-year life if properly maintained.

You are right on the numbers...Actually all homes with a 1976 title are HUD certified......

One thing that has seemed hard to do has been the effort to change the words people use and thier meaning....

Not a day goes by that I do not hear.."I want to see your trailors"...then often they correct themselves...a little embarrased..."..Oh...Oh..I mean I want to see your mobile homes"....I smile and hold my breath to keep from laughing.....

After speaking with the DAPIA for Skyline concerning a 'mobile home' that my wife and I had pre 1976, (Skyline model 'Ranada'), my year 2000 Skyline is not "beefier" than the mobile home we had in the early 70's.
With the introduction of the HUD Code, Underwriters Laboratory must authorize less structure today than prior to the 'codes.'
Prior to the 'codes', UL only had the 'standards' for building houses and that meant 16" O.C. for the framing and soo much more.
