Re: home values
The wife and I have been looking at DW's for several months. I was really
disappointed with the Cavalier; (2X4 exterior walls, plastic lavs, looks like
a trailer.) The Fleetwoods are a little better, but not much.
Ahh.... The Indies. You can pretty much order the Indies as you like, with
upgrade carpets, gas appliances, tile flooring, 2X6 exterior walls, whirlpool tub,
even doorbells, for about what the others are charging.
We toured the factory, and found them installing T&G plywood subflooring, and
other touches that make the construction a quality job.
You might also consider looking at the Palm Harbor "Greystone" model which
has a lot of upgrades available, and comes with a lot of great standard features.
We were sold on the Indies till we saw it, and right now are deciding between
those. Both the Indies and PH are 28 X 80. The only drawback to the PH
model is that it has a low ceiling height that won't accomodate our poster bed.
If you have not ordered Randy's book(let.) Do so. It has helped us look
beyond the fluff, and concentrate on the construction. It also had a few things
we had not considered as far as financing and who to buy from.
good luck

Re: home values
Where do you get Randy's Book? What is the title and publisher? Can I get it a borders or Barnes and Noble?
Re: home values
The "top" 10 would not include any of these in the SE where you must be...
You would see something like
Adrian
Horton
Homes of Merit
Jacobson
Mascot
Franklin
Norris
Top of the line Southern
Energy
Liberty out of NC
The other poster here is right..you can option many features into the Indies that you cannot in the others...It can be a good home with the right options...Check out Horton too..

Re: home values
Top ten in the SE would 'not' include any on your list??? Quite a few of those ten rate pretty high.
lol, I thought that too at first, then I realized...sm
he must have meant that neither Cavalier or Fleetwood would be on the top 10 list and then proceeded to list the good ones.
I've not heard of Indies yet, I'm going to try to find out more about them.

Re: Greystone
Speaking of Palm Harbor Greystone, I looked at one that was very similar to a Clayton (Lakeshore line). The house was beautiful but, unlike the Clayton, it didn't have a kitchen! Why is it that they build a house with over 2000 sq. feet but they don't put a kitchen in it?! the Clayton model DID have a kitchen, but for reasons I won't bore everybody with, I'll probably have to go with the Palm Harbor. The PH had a half-bath on the end of the house next to the laundry room which, I think, I could make into a pantry instead, but then I'll have to walk from the kitchen through the den to get to the pantry. No big deal - it's just a stupid design!
Does anybody know anything about the Greystone? I think it's manufactured in LaGrange, GA or possibly Boaz, Alabama.
Is Palm Harbor all it's cracked up to be?
Feedback, please!

Re: Greystone
I've talked with two salesmen, at different locatons, about the Greystone. I was
told that the LaGrange location builds them with the vinyl floors in the kitchen
and bath; the Boaz location builds them with tile in the kitchen and bath.
Other than that, they are supposedly identical (according to the salesman.)
You can't find any info on the internet regarding the Greystone. You have to
go to the lot to see it. They do have a specification sheet, and floorplan available
also.
I have also looked at the PH that you are talking about. I believe it is called
the "Builtmore." It has zilch for a kitchen, which my wife hated. The Greystone
has a huge pantry right there in the kitchen, and tons of cabinet space. It does
not have the "lazy susans", but doesn't really need them.
you can email me at: [email protected] if you would like some pics of the
inside of the Greystone. I took about 3 pics of the kitchen area. I also took pics
of the family room, and living room fireplace.

Re: Greystone
There is quite a difference in these 2 products...The LaGrange product is the most basic PH in the country...The AL home is a notch above...but not nearly a FL or Northern PH...
If you have been following Randy's books you will want at least 16 inch centers on the roof, walls and floors....Lagrange does not meet those specs...Also..OSB wrap is not standard......Check them out carefully..
