1996 Model Astro Double Wide
Hi, we purchased a 1996 Astro Double Wide Mobile Home on its own land in 2018. We just gutted one of the bathrooms to do a remodel and after removing the sheetrock we were blown away. On the other side of the rolled insulation we found only clear white plastic and then the siding, no foam core, no sheathing etc. This is an exterior wall how can the manufacturers get away with doing this? What's my recourse options? Please help.

I know this is an old post but that's wild. As the owner of a 2002 astro I'm not happy to hear it.

That’s a surprising and concerning find, but it does happen in older mobile homes. Some manufacturers used basic wall systems with insulation and a vapor barrier placed directly behind the siding. This approach met standards at the time, even for exterior walls. It often leads to poor insulation and weaker wall strength. Since the home is from 1996, holding the manufacturer accountable is unlikely. The practical step is to improve the wall during your remodel by adding sheathing, better insulation, and a proper moisture barrier to strengthen and protect the structure.

Wow, that's definitely not what you expect to find during a bathroom remodel! Seems like the construction standards back then might have been, shall we say, a bit lacking. Thinking about quick fixes while dealing with this reminds me of the simple, addictive fun you can find playing certain io games. But seriously, regarding your situation, I'd suggest contacting your local building code enforcement office.
