AC/Heat venting into underbelly area

Last year I had a new heatpump installed to replace my unit in my Clayton Homes Hermitage 90's doublewide. My duct work was rotted out so ducting was run through and under the underbelly. Recently I had to replace some subfloor in the laundry room (where the unit is located) and noticed that there was cold air under the floors when the A/C was running. I found the trunk going into the unit was not sealed in the front but all the other sides were. A friend whom I mentioned this to said that when the installer was putting theirs in he asked them about that and the installed said it was to keep the pipes from freezing in the winter by putting heat into the space between the underbelly insulation and the subfloors.

I would like to know if this is true. Should I leave it open or seal it shut?

I am not sure of the correct terminology for this topic so if I have erred please forgive and I will provide any information I am lacking.

Thank you in advance,.
