reroofing a 1978 Bendix double wide
Can anyone tell me if I have to take the old shingles off or can I put the new ones over the existing roof without the roof collapsing?

Most home roofs will carry two layers of shingles with out any problem.
You've got a lot of new choices today for manufactured home roof replacement. New engineered shingles are made to look like cedar or tile.
