I own a 2003 Homes of Merit manufactured home -- approximately 2400 sq. ft. under air. It has a steel roof (3 years old) and accordian shutters on all openings.
My question is on tying the roof down using permanent steel cables (straps are too unsightly), going over the roof and fastened to anchors in the ground on each side of the house.
1) is there such a system available on the market?
2) if not does anyone have such a set up installed on their home?
3) are there any engineer types who can offer any insight on this?
With the cost of insurance now at $3000/yr, and talk of it being doubled within 4 years, I need another option besides Citizens (the only company available).
Any input will be apprciated.
Thanks

Re: Manf.home roof tie down.
Apparently you are in Florida where Citizens is the state subsidized company that was formed to cover the gap in residential insurance left when the insurance companies abandoned the state after Hurricane Andrew.
In 2005 The Florida Bureau of Manufactured Home and RV Construction surveyed 11,800 homes in 77 communities in seven counties in the path of Hurricane Charley. All homes installed to the Florida 1999 tie-down regulations stood firm on their foundations. Manufactured Homes built and installed to the post Andrew codes didn't budge an inch in the 145 mph winds recorded at Punta Gorda.
If your home was built and installed in or after 2003 it should be set to the latest Florida wind standards, including the most stringent tie-down regulation in the country. Your late model Florida manufactured home is designed to withstand even hurricane-force winds. If your metal roof was installed properly there should be no reason to strap it down.
We have recently partnered with the Epic Insurance Agency of Florida in an effort to offer our Sunshine State visitors better insurance options. They have policies available from private providers that can offer better prices and coverage than Citizens.
