Ceramic Floors in Manufactured Homes

Post by Alex Farkas » Sat Mar 18, 2006 11:18 am

I'm sure this has been asked before, but can you install a ceramic tile floor in a manufactured home if the base is prepared well?

I have a 3/4" ply floor now with carpeting. If I lay down cement backer board and srcew it down, will that be enough or am I just kidding myself because of the movement inherent in manufactured homes?

And/or is there a better way to do this without costing a fortune?

If the home is properly installed with footings etc. You will have no problems with the installation you describe.

Hi,

I got your response, but the jacks are not sitting on cemment footers. They're on a slight layer of AB. I have block around the entire home so no water can penetrate.

Will that suffice?

With ABS pads set on top of the ground, with the additional weight of the tile, and the backer board,I wouldn't be surprised if some settlement occurs.

So, I guess then you would recommend against the ceramic tile? The home has been there for 3 years. Would you expect much more settlement?

We just purchased a PH home, and have ordered extensive ceramic tile. Before the home was entirely set up, we saw that there the tile has been glued to the osb board, with no cement backboard. We are very concerned that we have made a big mistake. PH assures us everything will be fine, but we have just read many articles on the internet that this is not good. What is your opinion?

Thank you.

Remember you PH has a 5 year buyer protection plan...The tile PH uses is a very high quality tile..The subfloor is solidly attached to floor joists on 16" centers....They have a specially formulated glue for this purpose.....Relax and enjoy this very nice home you have bought...If you have not had your "FTO" Final Trim Out..ask the tech for a more complete explanation..

Remember they build thousands and warranty thousands of homes this way every year....
