My husband and I are about to purchase a new Skyline Chaparrel 28x56 to place on a slab foundation on land we own in Kansas. We have read both the E-Books available here, which were a lot of help, but I still have a couple of lingering questions.
1. Is it better to add the OSB wrap on the sidewalls and forego the insulation value of the foam core panels? (Cost $600)
2. Is the Hardie Panel worth $1900 more than the standard vinyl siding.
We have already decided on lots of upgrades, namely 2x6 walls w/R19, R38 ceiling insulation, and OSB subfloor, but these last couple of choices have me stumped.
I’d appreciate any and all opinions.
Thanks, Goldie

Re: Help w/options on new house
1) YES...Most likely required with Hardi Plank siding
2) YES
2) YES

Thank you for the input.
Are there any structural (non cosmetic) upgrades that are NOT a good idea?
They all seem to be desirable.

Re: Help w/options on new house
As you said the majority of structural upgrades are just that...Upgrades. So yes they are all desirable. The question is does the location of your home warrant such upgrades. That is a decision you'all will have to make. Keep in mind some upgrades such as 2X6 sidewalls and upgraded insulation will end up typically paying for themselves in the long haul making them a good investment. Upgraded roof load would depend on obviously your local requirements but also on whether or not you were going to do any modification on site. Roof pitch serves more of a cosmetic purpose but is also a structural change that a lot of people desire. And YES pay for the Hardilap and dont be surprised when they need the OSB underlay. Good Luck and Merry Christmas,
