roof upgrade ??

I am considering a Crystal Valley home by Patriot. They come standard with the rafters on 24 inch centers. If i upgrade to a heavier roof load does it use heavier trusses, thicker sheathing, or put the trusses closer together ?

MH engineers use extremely funky roof designs.If they can get it to pass HUD's standards it gets built.The only kind of roof that should be on 24 inch centers is at least a 2 by 4 truss system.Sheathing is standard at 1/2 inch or 15/32's.you will have to see what options they give you.The closer to standard building codes the better.

The change in roof load, changes the centers on the trusses. A 20# roof can be constructed on 24" centers, with 7/16" sheathing. 30# then moves to 16" centers, and 40# moves to 12" centers. Depending on the structures design, changes may also be needed in the ridge beam as the roof load increases.
