What company do I choose?

Post by hk » Sun Dec 07, 2003 7:08 pm

We are in the market to buy a doublewide that is at least 28 by 60(a real 60). We will be putting this on a full basement, no doubt about it. My question is what company makes the best home to be put on a basement and stay sound for 30 years while we pay it off. And is there ever a length that is too long like a 72 footer? I do know by my research that they will reinforce the floor with beams and collums by I want it to be structuraly sound to begin with. I live in Maine and it seems that we only have a limited selection as many names I have read on here I have never heard of before. The major companies are Burlington, Champion, Skyline, Marlette by Schults, Fleetwood and Castle Housing. We are a young family starting out and can not afford much, but need the space. We have found a model we like by Champion(Advantage model 209) which is 28 by 72 and gives us the room we need but have been told that they may not be made as good as some other companies. And is the Advantage model the lowest in the rank of their models as it seems to good to be true that we could afford this size home from Champion and only one half its size from Burlington. I would like any advice about makes and models and about full basements and how the house holds up. Thanks!
P.S. Also about how the companies are after the sale if you have a problem.

There is no right or wrong answer to your quesiton.

I am a great believer in choosing the retailer over the manufactuer. The retailer will handle most service work. Find a good seller of homes and you will usually find pretty good homes.

If you look you can usually tell who makes the "best". Remeber "best" is a term that means different things to different people.

good luck
