Powerhouse Walls

Post by Chuck LaViolette » Tue Jun 17, 2003 9:24 pm

We have a couple more questions as we continue our home search.
This past weekend we looked at a "powerhouse" model by Cavalier and were VERY impressed with it. We found tons of info on it in these forums and among that info was the fact that they have 2X4 exterior walls and 2X3 interior walls. The sales person said it had 2X6 exterior and 2X4 interior walls. Were they misinformed or is the difference due to the fact that we are in windzone 2 (coastal SC)? If this is the case are all homes sold here built to this higher standard?
Also could you please tell us if there is a difference between Dynasty homes and Horton homes. The Dynasty dealer said they were the same and the Horton dealer said they were different.

Thanks again for your help!

There might be 2x6 exterior walls...but not likely 2x4 interior walls..

Also..be careful with what is said...some salespersons I know will tell you a home has 6 inch exterior walls and 4 inch interior walls...but they are not talking about the studs..they are talking about the total thickness of the walls including the sheetrock, sheeting and siding..much like 28 wide homes that are actually counting the overhang in the calculation..

Wind zone 2 does have better construction requirements in some areas of the home...but there still are many differences in the various homes..

Horton and Dynasty are identical homes except for the floorplans (in most cases they are mirror images of each other)..Some of the promotional homes are exactly alike..Remember Horton (Dynasty) offer a large number of options and there are a number of different series of homes..but all are well built..

How do you know when a salesman is telling a fib? His lips are moving.

The powderhouse is an "eye candy" piece of work, IMHO. Looks good , but
not constructed as well as you might want.

good luck

You might also want to check what the ceiling - roof is made of. From recent experience of looking above ceiling, roof deck is 1/2" OSB nailed to 2x3's, with rest of truss made from 2x2's. Interior walls are 1x4's.
