Skyline Poor Quality, Workmanship and Repair

Post by iammrssmc » Sat Oct 29, 2011 12:41 pm

Purchased with cash the Skyline Bunkhouse in May 2011. One week after handing over $100k, was told the factory was shutting down for a month and the home would take 8-10 weeks instead of 3-4 weeks. This was after my old house was torn down and I was living in my motorhome. The reason given was that business was slow!
The home was delivered in August and had so much structural damage that it took the assembly crew 4 weeks to get it move in ready. The crew said they had never seen so much damage, but didn't know if it was the transportation company's fault, or the factory. Either way, the home that was supposed to be 5-6 weeks total from the time I handed over my money to the time I could move in. It took 15 weeks.
During the final walk through, I reported many issues that needed to be repaired. Largest being the fireplace that was literally falling apart because it hadn't been mortared to the wall and the built in microwave that didn't work. It took two weeks for a repairman to come to the home, he did some of the little easy fixes, but said he would have to come back to repair the fireplace and they weren't going to do anything about the microwave, I would have to contact the manufacturer myself and have them come repair it.
It took another month for the repairman to come fix the fireplace. He and his partner took all the bricks off and remortared them to the wall. However, they didn't take the fireplace insert itself apart and when we went to use it a few days later, we found the mechanics hadn't been assembled. The wires were just laying there unconnected. The blower also hadn't been attached.
On the last visit from the repairman he informed me he didn't have the replacement cabinet door that was extremely damaged, he also didn't have the air vents for under the bathroom sinks, so the bathrooms smelled like sewer. He said he would Fed Ex them to me if I would install them myself. I said that was fine. Six weeks later I still didn't have the parts.
I've called the service department several times and left messages, but no one ever returns my calls. I went to the dealer's office and found they no longer deal with Skyline because of all the problems, but they would try to help get ahold of someone to help me.
I went to Lowe's and bought the vents myself at $25 each ( I needed 3) and installed them myself.
I have lived in the house for 2 months now and find that the floor squeaks in every room, the doors were hung improperly and squeak, many of the cabinet doors have staples sticking out because it was put together improperly, the vinyl flooring is coming up in multiple spots, the light in the shower goes out when the bulb gets hot, the deck flooring has huge gaps in spots, some of the windows are difficult to open and almost come off their tracks and the dryer vent was put in the wrong spot. The quality of the wood trim, cabinets and doors is extremely poor. The carpet bars at the opening of every door has nails poking through.
I have spent hundreds of dollars replacing and repairing things in the home myself since Skyline has refused to return my calls and provide the repairs they said they would.
This experience has been stressful, expensive and disheartening. Skyline should not be able to release such poor quality and workmanship on the market.

The delivery issue was ALL the dealer. Anyone with experience knows all plants close down for 4 weeks in the summer to give all employees vacation at the same time. Every May order in EVERY plant would take many weeks..Your dealer was foolish to promise delivery to your site in less than 4 weeks from the time he had the house. Proper site preparation, and complete set up most often takes 4 or more weeks.

That said I am sure many of these problems were caused by improper installation, but it does seem Skyline could be more responsive. You have not mentioned your experience with your state agency and your complaint..Your owners manual has a phone number in it for them but they are also listed on this site at http://www.mobilehome.com/yellow_pages/ ... &submit=Go

You might want to read the posts on this earlier thread of posts here. There are numbers mentioned of national service managers for Skyline...

Skyline is an honorable company. I cant tell you what happened to your home. I can tell you that Skyline would not permit a home with the level of damage your describing to leave the factory.

Go to the top, contact Ronald Foster. He is the National Director of Consumer Affairs for Skyline. You can write to him at [email protected]. I think you will find him ready to help you resolve your problems.

Sorry to hear about your problems with your home. We have just over a year in our Skyline and only have minor issues with it. We actually traveled to the factory and saw it being built, made for a nice road trip as we are in Washington and the Oregon plant was only around 6 hours away. We had some issues when it arrived, like the front door was broken! Other than that, just alot of little things like drywall cracks. We made a big list of items we'd have liked to have seen done at the walkthrough, but I think that paper just gets tossed by the dealer as no one has ever tried to fix any of them. We heard from the cleaning crew that it is totally common to take months to get these houses ready to move into. We told them we were only out about 6 weeks and they said, "wow, you must be on the fast track!" :)
