electrical problem

Post by vernon » Wed Dec 26, 2001 8:05 am

I HAVE TWO OUTLETS WHICH HAVE GONE DEAD NEXT TO MY SINK AND STOVE. ANYONE KNOW HOW TO CHECK IT OUT?

I HAVE CHECKED THE WIRES I CAN FIND AND ALL PLUG IN SOCKETS IN SERIES ARE OK. REPLACED ONE ON THE RIGHT OF THE SINK (WAS WORKING ANYWAY) BUT NO CHANGE IN DEAD ONE BY SINK AND STOVE.

IMPEIRAL 66' X 28' MODLE 1995

THANKS VERN

Quite possible that these outlets are GFCI protected. Check the reset buttons on any GFCI outlets in bathrooms or kitchen.

In a 1995 model home all the kitchen outlets should be GFCI, and generally are on one circuit leading off a GFCI unit, normally located at or near the kitchen counter. You should check this outlet, both the outlet itself and the wiring leading off the back to complete the circuit. Note: there are plug-in testers available for testing circuits. If the master unit is bad all outlets on that circuit will malfunction, i.e. two bad outlets. The "bad" outlets may be perfectly funcional. One "at home" way to check them out is to connect them to a circuit that you know is funtioning properly. Note: even new outlets are not always good, you might want to check that too. Start with the GFCI outlet and check toward the faulty outlets. If that doesn't work, feel free to drop me a line and we can work on plan "B".

All the GFCI info is right on. Also, don't limit your search for the controlling GFCI outlet. I have found outlets in the dining room which effect both bath and kitchen. Also, double check your electric panel (if you haven't already) as sometimes there is a GFCI breaker installed with a reset button on the breaker.
