shingles

Post by bryan » Wed Sep 28, 2005 5:24 pm

Hello, I own a skyline home that is 1 year old. I just noticed that they put 2 layers of shingles on from the factory. I ordered the home to have black shingles and it looks like they installed brown and then realized they were supposed to be black and just covered over the brown with black. Will this hurt anything, like maybe in the future if the home needs new shingles will they have to tear the old off because of it having to many layers?

Yup, too much weight. Two layers is usually all they do. Some day you are at Home Depot, try picking up just one bundle of shingles, and you will realize how many thousands of pounds of shingles you have on your roof.

Do you think I should have them torn off now? Or do you think I could just wait until they need to be replaced?

I would leave them alone. Twenty years or so from now, clean it all off, and start anew.

My understanding is that they are engineered for one layer only, and when the roof is replaced, it's a tear-off. So I would certainly see if in fact there are two layers, and get expert advice if there are. So my vote is for a possible tear-off. That said, the fancy architectural shingles were an option on my place ( I didn't take them) so perhaps it's OK. Hmmm...

If two layers of shingles is a problem weight wise then you have a poorly designed roof truss. The extra shingle layer will increase your insulation value and conserve energy. Keep them on and when it needs replacement both layers will have to come off.

I think we need an engineer to settle this one... how about copying / pasting your post over in the repair forum? Jane, where does your info come from? Are you / do you know a structural engineer in the MH business?

The additional weight overall is considerable but per sq ft shouldn't be enough to be an issue. Here in Florida we have overlaid a second layer of shingles on manufactured homes that date back to the early 80s with out any problem. Unless the home is located in the extreme north, where snow loads could be a factor I would leave the second layer in place.

If you want some additional assurance write to Skyline's home office

Skyline Corporation Headquarters

Elkhart, Indiana 46515

If you would be comfortable with a verbal reply phone them at:

(800) 348-7469
(574) 294-6521

Tell them about your concerns and see what they say. Skyline has a long time reputation for customer satisfaction. I think they will put your mind at ease.

You could have a "Starter Row."
Rather than two layers of shingles...
