The Manufactured Housing Forums

Has anyone ever heard of or used what they call the "Helical" system for supporting a manufactured home. Basically this is a system loosely based on the gulf oil rigs where large pipes with boring "helical" blades are buring deep into the soil strategically placed at points where the home's frame will be located. These pipes have smaller pipes inside them and when the home is setup and blocked, the smaller pipes are raised up to the frame and welded. Then the pipes are welded together around the mouth of the larger pipe and you have a solid shaft that the home rests on. They say it is an excellent system and no concrete runners are needed! Any information would be appreciated.

Helical foundation underpinnings have been used for new and retrofit uses in conventional construction for many years. The bearing surface of the blades provides the support and holddown requirements all in one. Usually they are made of stainless steel for longevity. A.B. Chance is the manufacturer that I know of, and should be available nationwide.
