mold in walls

Post by stacie sherman » Fri Nov 11, 2005 3:17 pm

our modular home was set at the end of sept 2005. what we thought was going to be our dream home has turned into a nightmare. it started on the day the house was set - the set crew never finished the roof - it rained and we had water in our brand new home. a week later we found mold on the walls where the water damage had occured - not a lot but it was still there. they claimed it was surface mold and it would not come back. my concerns are what is behind the walls. they fixed the roof but there is more to come. about 3 weeks ago it rained again - this time the water came into the 1st floor walls because the house was never completly buttoned up. they tore out some of the 1st floor walls (but only the bottom half). my husband and i both had concerns that the top half of the wall (where the majority of the water was seen) should be torn out as well. move to last night when my plumber was working on the 1st floor ceiling and finds more mold. my question is - is there anyway to be sure that all mold is gone - short of tearing all the walls out. i contacted a mold person and he said to wait until spring and that is when the mold will start growing. i would prefer not to wait - we have 4 children and that would be a huge issue if we had to move out at a later date for the mold to be addressed at that time. any advice would be great.

First of all, don't be overly alarmed. most mold is easily handled and can be killed with bleach.
You said your home was a modular, if it is a Manufactured home, file a complaint with either your state or HUD. this number will get you where you need to complain to:
800-927-2891

find out if it is a modular before you call. Just because it comes in two or more sections, does not make it a mod.
If you have red metal labels on the siding of your home, but the corners, it is a manufactured home.
