West Virginia triple vs. double

Post by Sandra » Fri Nov 01, 2002 8:13 pm

My family is planning on buying a new manufactured home. We currently live in a 1984 Clayton which is slowly falling apart. We are a family of four and need a lot of room due to my daughter's special circumstances and we have checked the sizes and prices of many homes. Honestly, there are a lot of repeating floor plans and the prices seem to run close. We would like to know which manufacturers would be recomended and also if there is a problem with triple wides. We had a Colony dealer tell us the triple wides were difficult to set and also there is a lot of problems with the houses sinking. Also, is there a manufacturer whose homes look cosmetically more like a stick-built home. It seems most manufactured homes look alike. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

The large manufacturers in the industry build different homes in different plants...even sometimes more than 1 home in a single plant...

Some folks eliminate some manufacturers because of the local service they provide...or the dealers that offer them...Remember..nearly all your satisfaction will be in the dealer and his sales team and set up crew...

For instance..I would be very suspect of the dealer that said he cannot set a triple....If the home is set with proper footings it is not likely to settle...and if a double settled it would have just as much trouble as a triple...I think I would skip this dealer...

There are many different exterior looks in manufactured homes...It is all a matter of price and value to customers...More complicated exteriors cost more money...Many of the manufactured home buyers run out of money before this item hits the list of things to buy...

The real key is making basic desisions about what you want and how far you are willing to reach into your pocketbook..Remember to shop finance as well...the lower the rate..the more home and goodies you can afford...Rates vary greatly amoung dealers...

You are on the right track...Ask questions..and more questions..Surf the net..get information...the internet allows areas like this one to help you for free..with no self interest of the posters...best advice you can get..

You might consider going to the book store on this site for a basic primer on manufactured homes...From what I have heard..the following is a very good help to many buyers...not a Bible..but very informative..

Hi Sandra,

For very well built homes either look into Horton or Skyline. You can get regular sheet-rock walls in either one. With the right pitch of the roof, no one will be able to tell the difference between it and a stick built home. Hope this helps. Have a blessed day.

Sandra, I am in the process of buying a single wide Clayton mobile home. I have not made any committment yet so there is still time for me to change my mind. Since you currently live in a clayton home, could you give me your opinion of the clayton home product? Why is yours slowly falling apart, is due to workmanship or neglect of repairs?
I look forward to hearing your opinion.

Thanks,
