Tie downs and warranties

Post by Paula » Wed Jul 24, 2002 10:49 am

We've decided that we are going to purchase a Skyline. One of the dealers said that the home doesn't need to be "tied down". We're putting in central Wisconsin, so I'm concerned about it not being tied down. They get tornadoes in WI! That dealer told us that if the wind was strong enough to blow the thing away, there is nothing a tie down is going to do as the weight of the home was strong enough. What are your views? Also, I called the Lancaster, WI plant for Skyline and they said that Novodeck is the only flooring available and everyone (dealers and Skyline itself) is saying what a "wonderful" product it is. After everything I've read here, I'm very skeptical!! I talked to the corporate HQ too, and they said it's a fine product too. HQ also told me that Lancaster was one of their best plants too, so that was nice :) I also called the Lancaster plant and got the CSI ratings (what they use to determine who wins customer service awards) for the 4 dealers we're working with.

About warranties...Skyline offers a 1 year end to end, 15 months if you return the registration card. Some dealers are offering a 10 year warranty and one of them wanted $800 with a $25 deductible per incident. What do you think about getting an extended warranty?

Thanks for your help everyone...this forum is fabulous and I've learned so many things!!

Tie downs...

Wind zone 1....you and almost everyone reading these boards...the home MUST be set to the setup requirements per the set up manual....The dealer has NO options in this...All manufactured homes require some sort of tie downs or anchor system...There are systems that do not require anchors...Vector system comes to mind...if anchors are used there is at least 4 on the home...larger homes will have as many as 8...Check the set up manual for specific advice....I think the sale person does not know what they are saying here..

Tornados.....anchors will not help you if there is a direct hit by a tornado..in this or any other type of home...

Many of the best mortgage companies require "permanent foundation"...this usually includes tie downs or other stabilizing system..

As a thirty year dealer....5 years as a high volumn used home center..my opinion of this flooring system is well known...you can find numerous posts by me to that effect...If this were the only floor offered...I would be looking eleswhere..

We own a 2001 Skyline that came out of the San Jucinto Ca. plant and it came with T. & G. plywood floors. Why don't you call Skyline back and ask them if the Ca. plant uses plywood, why can't we get it! Should be the same at all plants.
Good luck. We really are happy with our home.
