moving an older double wide
moving an older double wide
We are wanting to purchase a used 1976 double wide that is in very good condition. We want to move it to a piece of property. How hard is it to tear down and reset a used double wide yourself. Can the special jacks be rented? My husband has been in the construction industry but has never done any work on a double wide mobile home, but he is quite capable if he can find some instructions on how to do it. Is there any video or book that gives these instructions?
Re: moving an older double wide
Your husband should NOT try to move or set up your home by himself. The operations involved in jacking and raising the home can be very dangerous and should be attempted only by experienced individuals. At the same time home buyers MUST take responsibility for their home installation. If you want to enjoy your home for years to come the site prep and installation must be handled properly. Even though you should not be doing the work yourself, it is critical that home buyers understand the entire process.
The most effective way I have found to learn about the step by step process involved in properly installing a manufactured home is a great five-part video series with George Porter, the industry's most respected installation specialist. Mr. Porter leads you through a two hour viewing experience that will prepare you for the numerous operations and complexities involved in the installation of the modern manufactured home.
If your reading this and you are about to purchase a manufactured home Don't assume that the retailer or the installer are watching out for your best interests. take this crash study course now Click Here for More Details This will give you an edge when choosing sub-contractors and help you make sure the site preparation and installation is done right and to your expectation.

Re: moving an older double wide
Do not allow your husband to move and set up a double wide, because if your house leaks you will be wasting the money you spent on it.

Re: moving an older double wide
we have a 1953 manufactured home on our property we would like to move it to another location on the property. Do you know what it takes to move it? It will not be used for a home after that. Electricity, water, and septic will not be a problem.
Re: moving a double wide
I have a trucking company lined up for $1400 to move my dbl wide from the Detroit metro area to the thumb area. He does not do tear downs or reattach them.
My husband is a contractor and is leary about doing it by himself. He is willing to work side by side with someone who knows what they are doing.
I need to find a good price for the project.

The trucking is the easiest and least complex part of a MH relocation. Your husband should NOT try to set up your home by himself. Jacking and raising a manufactured home is very different than almost any other jacking operations. I can not stress enough how dangerous this can be. Additionally every local building permit authority has a different interpretation of the HUD set up code. In the long run, your most economic option would be to find a local licensed contractor that can pull the permits, install the home safely and knows what to do to satisfy the local inspection process.

Try Clark's in Clio, Action in Clinton township or Dave Peters in Clinton Township.
All do excellent work and you won't have to worry about your husband getting hurt or your home being damaged.

Re: moving a double wide
We just purchased a double wide 30x70 that was being used as a classroom at our kid's shool. We need to have it moved by August 1. Who do we contact to move it? We only paid $900.00 for it and I would hate to have to pay any more than that to get it to our house. We want to use it as an attachment. The wheels and the axles are no longer with it. We have plenty of friends willing to help move this. However we really do need instructions. The double wide is sitting on foundation right now. We are sure that the steel frame is intact. We need the jacks to lift it and we have a trailer we can rent, and a semi to pull it. We also know that it comes apart in four sections. Can someone please give us some advice?

The best thing you can do is call a professional home mover...or manufactured home mover....The laws and fine for violation are different in every state...but here in GA it is not unusual for a DOT set of violations to have fines in the thousands...Moving a home can be very dangerous..If you get a pro at least you and all those others on your roads will be safe....A pro will cost more than you expect...even short moves will cost more than you think..Axle rental is about $100 per axle with tires...A home this size will have 6 or 8...Closing a home and wrapping it to be legal to be transported can be 4 or 5 hundred dollars..These guys have high expenses to cover...$ 80,000 trucks..expensive tires..high fuel costs.and about $30,000 for required insurance...DOT requirements can cost thousands per year..Portable class rooms are commercial modular structures and might well not be allowed on your lot..especially for residential use..A pro would know to check with the building inspector...If you want a pro to disassemble..move and reassemble this size home you will be talking many thousands of dollars..Removal of the foundation and clean up could cost much more than you have as a target for the job..Moving this home legally and safely is going to cost much more than you hope for..Sorry for the bad news...
