crazy reply to Diana's question

No manufactured home is designed for any additions, let alone a second floor added to a home on two different types of foundations! If you live in any state that enforces building codes, they would never allow this! And for good reason, it is not safe! If you want to provide a good home for your fam...

Re: Your advice sought - slate tile on wall

I would be concerned that the weight on the wall with 24" studs would cause it to bow.
On either wall, the wall board could pull off or even break.
At least screw the wall board to the studs first.
I would over lay the wall board with plywood if I were you.

Re: Soil Bearing

Rbonnie is right. A few years back, we contacted the maker of the pocket penitrometer. They clearly stated that their tool is to measure the compaction of fill ONLY! 6" layers!
Your code official is doing you a favor!

Re: Replacing double windows with French Doors

It could. If the double windows header is not as long as you need for the french doors, you will be doing a major alteration to the home. which is likely to lead to ceiling cracking. Also, the location of the doors is dicated by egress escape considerations of the HUD code. If you close off one of t...

floor live load

Manufactured homes are designed to support 40 PSF. so you will be overloading the floor.
Every home owners manual will tell you to at a support peir under the floor to support heavy items, like water beds, fireplaces, aquariums, my ex wife, ect.
be safe, not sorry.

Re: Sizes of mobiles?/Two story mobiles?

yes, the still make 14 x 72' homes. two story manufactured homes are fairly common, but generally they are two boxes on top of two boxes on the bottom. I have however seen a few 16' wide two story homes. Check with the dealers in your area to see if you have manufacturers the do it. if you are in th...

Re: Energy Audit

I think they are talking about luan plywood. it is 1/4 thick and often used to stiffen walls.
I never heard of this being done throughout an entire home.
I would prefer wall studs at 16' on center to limit any warping of the wall board.

Re: Vapor barrier in ceiling

The ceiling gypsum must be left intact for the structural integrity of the home. There is already a vapor barrier on the ceiling. If you want to add to that, I suggest vapor barrier paint that is readily available. Now, if you put wood planks on the ceiling, you will violate the HUD code, Section 32...

Hold on a minute

You need to understand that the floor decking in a manufactured home keep the walls erect during wind storm. The technical term is a Horizontal Shear Diamphragm. The very most you should consider is overlaying the Novadeck with 1/4 plywood. that way you can stiffen the floor without adding much to t...
